Student party Humanities Rally to be dissolved

Humanities Rally will continue as an action group. ‘After three years, we’ve come to the conclusion that change can only be achieved through protest.’

The open letter of Humanities Rally looks a lot like the letter sent by student party De Decentralen a few weeks ago. The UvA’s directors have done ‘everything they could to avoid participation’, it reads. In addition, the student council does not have any real influence, but can only delay decisions.

Humanities Rally will continue as an action group as it began in 2014 in response to cutbacks at the Faculty of Humanities. During the occupations of the Bungehuis and Maagdenhuis, it was one of the most active groups. Its members argue that much still needs to change at the Faculty of Humanities, and that the 23 full-time jobs due to be lost because of cut backs will be disastrous. The letter states: ‘This will lead to the further erosion of specialisms and an increased workload for students and staff.’

Only one month ago, De Decentralen, the largest student party of the UvA, also dissolved itself. It too criticised the way in which the UvA was governed and the limited influence given to student parties.
